Law and safety

Drink-driving limits around the world

Compare the general BAC threshold with lower limits for novice, young and professional drivers. Comparison values use the unit of the selected legal system, while each country’s local notation remains visible.

A legal limit is not a safe dose

Alcohol can affect driving below the statutory threshold. A calculator cannot decide whether a person is fit to drive.

One country can have several limits

Lower rules often apply to learners, young or professional drivers, passenger transport and particular vehicle classes.

Zero tolerance means zero

Instrument tolerances and higher criminal thresholds are not an extra permitted allowance for drinking and driving.

General limit means the rule shown for an ordinary car driver. A lower threshold may apply sooner to a novice, professional or under-age driver.

Impairment rule without a BAC number means the law prohibits impaired driving without giving one general numeric value. It is not permission to drive after drinking.

Alcohol prohibited or restricted describes jurisdictions with broader alcohol controls where the sources do not state a separate BAC threshold.

No confirmed number means the available evidence was not strong enough to publish a specific value.

A legal limit is not a safety limit. If you have been drinking, do not drive — use public transport, a taxi or a sober driver.

Methodology

General threshold first, then the exceptions

The database covers 198 countries and territories. The main value is the threshold for an ordinary car driver. Lower limits for novice, young or professional drivers and special vehicle categories are described separately.

The comparison source records BAC in mg/ml. For readability, we convert those values into the unit familiar from the selected country's legal system. Where no single confirmed value is available, we distinguish a law defined through impairment, a wider restriction involving alcohol, a threshold stated only for breath, and a genuine lack of sufficient data. We do not enter zero simply because a source did not provide a number. Last reviewed: 7 września 2026.

Sources and currency

The IARD global comparison is checked against WHO 2023 data and, for disputed or region-dependent entries, available national laws and competent-authority pages. Each table row links to the best source used for that entry.

  1. International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD): Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Limits

A global comparison of BAC and BrAC thresholds, exceptions and the legislation or authority cited for each jurisdiction. IARD states that entries are checked against national authorities or public documents.

  2. World Health Organization: Global status report on road safety 2023

WHO data supplied through government-designated national focal points, separating general limits from those for young, novice and professional drivers.

  3. European Commission — European Road Safety Observatory: Alcohol and drugs — legislation and enforcement

A comparison of general, novice and professional-driver limits across European countries, reported in g/L.

This page is educational and not legal advice. Rules can change and depend on age, licence status, vehicle and region. Check the current competent authority before travelling. If you have been drinking, do not drive.
